Evaluation

Evaluation

In order to assess the archaeology present on a site planning authorities can require an archaeological evaluation before, or as a condition of, granting planning permission. We can work with you to design an appropriate strategy that fulfils your requirements. Trial trenches covering a sample of the site are the most common evaluation method. Our highly experienced field team also undertake earthwork and walkover surveys, and integrate geophysical surveys into site evaluations.

Excavation

Excavation

Worcestershire Archaeology’s staff have a wealth of excavation experience on urban and rural sites of all sizes. Excavation is required by planning authorities for known areas of significant archaeology. We will work with you and the local planning authority archaeological adviser to design, and efficiently deliver, a bespoke scheme of investigation. The aim of this is to reduce the impact of the development on the archaeological remains and maximise the information recovered in a time and cost sensitive manner. Our skilled post-excavation team will then analyse and prepare a site report – find out more about our in house environmentalfinds and illustration teams.

Watching brief

Watching brief

Watching briefs involve archaeological monitoring of intrusive groundwork, including soil stripping, and are typically carried out in areas of limited archaeology or minimal development impact. We have experienced, CSCS accredited field staff, who can undertake watching briefs at short notice.

Quarries & minerals

Quarries and minerals

Worcestershire Archaeology is a trusted quarry contractor and currently manages the archaeological mitigation programmes for many mineral sites within the West Midlands and beyond. In addition to developing and delivering targeted mitigation plans for individual quarries, we have produced county-wide aggregate resource assessments for Worcestershire and Staffordshire and contributed to that for Herefordshire. Working with Historic England, we have also undertaken projects that developed new ‘toolkits’ and approaches for the more effective evaluation and mitigation of quarry sites.
