  • 23rd October 2024

We are looking for help to find out more about Worcester born Sheila Scott and expand our archive collections for future researchers. Join us at The Hive to share your knowledge or let us know via our online enquiry form.

Perhaps best known as a female aviator who in her lifetime broke over one hundred records, including the first solo around the world flight by a British subject, the longest-distance solo flight, and only the third around the world flight by a woman.
Her links to Worcester remain largely forgotten.

Born Sheila Christine Hopkins on 27 April 1922 at 12 Park Avenue and baptised at All Saints Church in Worcester, Sheila lived in Worcester until around 1939 and attended Alice Ottley School. After working as a nurse, actress and model, she first learnt to fly in 1959. Before moving from Worcester she also lived at 5 Sunnyside Road and 29 Beech Avenue, later 8 Beech Avenue North. Her father worked at Hopkins confectioners in Broad Street and was an Alderman of the city of Worcester.

After her round the world flight in 1966 Sheila was invited back to Worcester by the mayor and received the OBE from the Queen in 1968. Her painting was bought for Worcester Art Gallery in 1969.
