Family History Events – Autumn 2018

  • 22nd August 2018

Looking at starting or restarting your family history?

In autumn we often get people coming to us asking how to begin tracing their family tree. For some they are looking at starting or restarting now that summer is over, whilst others may have been inspired by conversations, or even as a result of watching the latest series of Who Do You Think You Are? We can see this here in The Hive with a rise in visitors in September, which is great to see.

We often get asked for advice on how to start because it can all seem overwhelming, especially when TV programmes and articles make it seem you just pop a name into a computer! Each year we run workshops to help people begin, based on many years of experience helping visitors and doing our own research. Many people want to trace their family tree but are not sure where to look or what the different information needs. We run several different workshops and introductions to help you get started depending on your preference.

Want a full introduction to explain how to do it, what the key sources are and how to search?

We have a three part workshop that helps you start, which includes time each week to go online and help you begin your own family history research. In between continue your searches and come back each week with any findings or questions.

Monday 1 October 2-4pm, for 3 weeks  £20

Just looking for a brief introduction of where to look in The Hive?

First Steps in Family History runs monthly on Thursday mornings for one hour to show you where to go and where to begin.

6 Sept, 4 Oct, 1 Nov, 6 Dec  11:30  £6

Want to get guidance on the key family history websites?

We have workshops devoted to the Ancestry.co.uk and Find My Past websites, which both free to use within The Hive. We’ll explain the key sources they contain and how to search, allowing time to have a go yourself and see what you can find.

Ancestry.co.uk                  Tuesday 30 October, 7-9pm  £6

Find My Past                     Tuesday 6 November, 7-9pm  £6

Prefer something to read that explains all the key family and local sources or like something to go alongside the workshops?

We have a new 70 page pdf booklet which goes into detail about the family history sources, what is available and how they can help you.  Find out more about the booklet here.
